The Prelude FLNG (Floating Liquefied Natural Gas) project currentlybeing undertaken in the Browse Basin off the north west coast of WesternAustralia, 475 kilometres north northeast of Broome, will process naturalgas from the Concerto and Prelude gas fields.

Prelude Gas Field is Near the Giant Ichthys Field in the Browse Basin

The Prelude natural gas field, in the Browse Basin, is majority owned byRoyal Dutch Shell with a 67.5 percent interest, 17.5 percent is owned byINPEC, Kogas 10 percent and OPIC five percent. The Prelude field wasdiscovered in 2007 and the Concerto field in 2009, as extensions of thenearby great Ichthys gas field, although, on investigation, they bothproved to be separate from the actual Ichthys field.

Prelude FLNG is Being Built by Technip and Samsung Heavy Industries

To economically extract the gas from the Prelude and Concerto fields, andto save the cost of laying a pipeline to an onshore processing facility on the Western Australian coast, where the nearest point is 200 kilometres south, in the remote Kimberley region, Shell, decided to build the worlds first floating liquefied natural gas platform, which also happens to be the largest offshore facility ever constructed. The Prelude FLNG is being built by Technip and Samsung Heavy Industries in South Korea. The platform that is 488 metres in length and 74 metres in width contains over 260,000 tonnes of steel, five times the amount used to build the Sydney Harbour Bridge. In operation it will weigh in excess of 600,000 tonnes, over five times that of the world's largest aircraft carrier. The hull of the Prelude FLNG was launched in 2013 with the project due for completion in 2016.It is expected to have a production life of 25 years. The Prelude FLNG will allow Shell to produce gas at sea, liquefy it and pump it directly into LNG (liquefied natural gas) tankers for world wide distribution.

Prelude FLNG Being Built in South Korea

The largest turrent mooring system built for the Prelude FLNG project wasshipped to Samsung Heavy's yard in Goeje, South Korea, from SBM Offshore's shipyard in Dubai, in August 2014. This integral piece ofinfrastructure will facilitate the Prelude FLNG's ability to withstandextreme winds and currents and allow operations to continue in a widevariety of weather conditions. The turrent is 328 feet high, the largest in the world of its type. The Prelude FLNG will be held in place by fourgroups of mooring chains fixed to piles embedded in the sea floor. Thefixtures are designed to with stand the force of a category five cyclone, or a one in 10,000 year storm.

Prelude Gas Field in 250 Metres of Water

The Prelude gas field is located 250 metres below the sea surface andwhen operational the FLNG platform will be able to process 0.4 milliontonnes per annum (mtpa) of LPG (liquefied petroleum gas), 1.3 mtpa ofcondensate and 3.6 mtpa of LNG. The Prelude and Concerto gas fields areestimated to contain in excess of three trillion cubic feet of gas rich liquids.

Prelude FLNG to Require a Large Workforce

When operational, the Prelude FLNG will employ between 240 and 260personnel directly. This number is made up of two shifts of between 120and 140 people. Workers will be employed on a fly-in-fly-out rotation basis. When maintenance is being carried out the workforce is expected toexceed 300 workers. A further 100 people will be employed in onshoreactivities and a further 600 will be required in contractor and support roles.
