The Gladstone Cement plant, that is located at Fishermans Landing in Gladstone, Queensland, has Australia's largest cement kiln. The kiln is capable of producing more than 1.6 million tonnes of cement annually from limestone mined near Mount Larcom at the East End quarry. A second cement kiln at the Gladstone Cement plant produces around 300,000 tonnes of lime a year that is used in the two alumina refineries based in Gladstone.
The Gladstone Cement Plant is The Largest Such Plant in Australia
The Gladstone Cement plant is also Australia's leading environmental performing cement plant and the most efficient in the country because of its use of 'state of the art' technology. The plant processes copper slag, silica sand, clay, limestone and iron additives to produce and supply clinker ( an intermediate product that results from cement making) and cement. The cement is supplied both in bulk and in bags, throughout Australia and for export to overseas countries.
Gladstone Cement Plant Reduces Greenhouse gas Emissions
The Gladstone Cement making process involves the mining of raw material as well as the manufacturing and delivery of bulk and bagged cement. The 'state of the art' technology involved in the process of making Gladstone cement includes laboratory systems and the various process controls that are used to monitor and manage each production step, as well as the delivery process, to make certain the product produced is of the highest standard possible. Fuel consumption at the plant has been reduced by 36 percent in recent years and this has resulted in a corresponding fall in greenhouse gas emissions.
Rejected By-products of Other Industries Found to be Useful at Gladstone Cement Plant
In an effort to further conserve important resources, the Gladstone Cement plant makes use of by-products produced by other industries as a source of fuel and the supply of raw material that can be beneficial in the cement manufacturing process. For instance, a solvent gas liquid fuel is used as a substitute for up to five persent of coal that would otherwise be needed. This reduces the amount of waste that would normally have to go to land fill. The aluminium, steel and power generation industries also supply solid by-products from their industries that would otherwise be discarded. These by-products add value to the cement being manufactured at the Gladstone Cement plant and would be classified as waste if not used in this way.
Gladstone Cement Lime Kiln Supplies the Sugar, Mining and Aluminium Industries With Lime
The lime produced at the Gladstone Cement plant is processed in a refurbished cement kiln that produces up to 300,000 tonnes of lime a year that is sold to the aluminium, mining and sugar growing industries in Queensland.
The East End limestone quarry near Mt Larcom is Queenslandís largest limestone open pit mine. It is located 47 kilometres from the Gladstone Cement plant and is connected to the cement works via a railway loop.
Cement Australia was the first cement manufacturer in Australia to introduce bag filters into the industry. This innovation has significantly reduced dust emissions. The Gladstone Cement plant's clinker cooler is regarded as being the industry's most efficient because of its ability to recuperate heat. Gladstone Cement is used to make concrete used in many major civil construction and infrastructure projects in Central Queensland, New South Wales and in far north Queensland.
