Eidsvold siltstone is a finely grained, yet dense, sandstone of a white appearance containing seven percent illite, 33 percent kaolin and 60 percent quartz. It has attractive streaks of limonite running through it. Eidsvold Siltstone has a compressive strength of 44.4 Mpa, a feature that makes it suitable for construction work as well as for landscaping. The stone is mined in blocks and processed into bricks, pavers and tiles. Waste material is crushed into an aggregate to be used as a decorative landscape river type pebble.
The Eidsvold Siltstone Quarry is Located Near the Town of Eidsvold in Queensland
The Eidsvold Siltstone quarry is located 395 kilometres from Brisbane, 296 kilometres from Rockhampton and 179 kilometres from Bundaberg in the Maryborough Region of Queensland. It is situated on the Burnett Highway just outside the town of Eidsvold.
Eidsvold Siltstone Pty Ltd was Established in 2000
Eidsvold Siltstone Pty Ltd is a small privately owned company that was formed to market the fine grained quartz-kaolin rich sandstone after it was discovered in a road cutting outside the town of Eidsvold in February 2000.
Eidsvold Siltstone is Mined From a 204 Million Year old Lakebed
Eidsvold siltstone is mined from a 204 million year old Triassic Period lakebed (the period that is renown as the age of the dinosaurs). The lakebed is now exposed as a low hill at Lochaber Creek on the Burnett Highway midway between Mundabbera and Eidsvold. Eidsvold siltstone is regarded as being unique because of its exotic cross flow texture, its strength and its colour. For these reasons it has been acclaimed by the stone industry, both within Australia and internationally.
Eidsvold Siltstone and Sandstone is a World Class Material
The ancient Eidsvold Siltstone geological formation is now producing world class aggregate, tumbled pebbles, sculpturing blocks, cladding bricks and tiles, in a completely chemical and waste free environment. Beneath the siltstone there is a coarser grained world class sandstone.
Eidsvold was Once Renown as a Goldfield
In the 1880's Eidsvold was best known as a goldfield with a population of more than 2,000 people. Today it is home to around 500 people. The area was extensively worked up until 1900 when interest in gold mining in the area declined owing to continual failure of the gold miners in locating workable shoots. Since 1906 a limited number of small scale gold and antimony mining operations have persisted in mining of the Eidsvold area. The latest gold find occurred in 1931 at Cracow, 95 kilometres from Eidsvold and for some time was the only gold producer in Queensland, other than the Mount Morgan operation.
The Town of Eidsvold was Founded in 1890
Eidsvold is regarded by locals as being the ìBeef Capital of the Burnettîas it is the centre of the regional cattle industry. The town derives its name from the nearby Eidsvold cattle station, that was in turn named after the town of Eidsvold in Norway. The station was originally licensed to Thomas Archer who also had land holdings in Norway in partnership with his brothers who ran the Eidsvold station. The town Eidsvold was founded east of the station homestead in 1890 with the Eidsvold post office opening in September 1887.
