The Cows coal mine in central Queensland, that is located 13 kilometressouth of Collinsville, is owned by independent, privately owned coalmining company, QCoal Group, a company that has been actively engagedin coal exploration, discovery and project development in Queenslandsince 1989.

Cows Mine Extracts Coal From the Moranbah Coal Measures

The Cows open cut mine is a relatively small operation that complimentsQCoal Group's other coal mines working the Moranbah coal measures. These mines include the nearby Sanoma mine, the Jax mine and the newDrake mine. These operations will be joined by the larger Byerwen Projectthat is expected to come online in 2015.

Cows Mine Produces One Million Tonnes of Coal a Year

The Cows coal mine, that is currently producing around one million tonnesof coking and thermal coal a year, produced its first coal product in April, 2013. The Cows mine is managed from the nearby Sanoma mine byLeighton Contractors. All coal produced by the Cows mine is taken to theSanoma CHPP (Coal Handling and Preparation Plant) where it isprocessed by Sedgman Limited which is contracted by QCoal Group tooperate the facility on their behalf. The Cows mine coal is then loaded onto railway wagons that take it 105 kilometres to the Abbot Point CoalTerminal from where it is exported to the company's overseas customers. The Cows coal mine itself employs about 20 personnel.

Cows Coal Exported From Abbot Point Port

QCoal Group operates its Bowen Basin mining operations through anorthern hub whereby all its coal mining operations share the sameinfrastructure, including contractors, logistics, coal preparation andmining. All coal from the northern hub is railed to Abbot Point CoalTerminal for export on the same railway system, this ensures customersreceive a consistent homogenous coal quality.

The Last Independent Source of Hard Coking Coal

QCoal Group is possibly the last independent source of premium hardcoking coal in the world and the northern hub mines, that include the Cowsmine, and the new Byerwen Project to its south, will ensure a consistentsupply that will last for the next 50 years.

Sonoma Mine CHPP Processes 800 Tonnes of Coal an Hour

The central Sonoma Mine CHPP processes up to 800 tonnes of coal anhour. It was both designed and developed by contracting company,Sedgeman Limited, which now employs 20 permanent workers at the facility. The Abbot Point port from where the Cows mine coal is exported,is owned by the Ports Corporation of Queensland (PCQ). It is the closestdeep water port on the Queensland east coast to the Asian market. It is also a port with proven reliability that doesn't suffer from congestion. It is currently undergoing considerable expansion to allow it to handleincreased throughput in future years.
