The Byerwen open cut coal mining project in north Queensland appearscertain to commence construction in 2015, as planned, now that allapprovals have been obtained. Project owner, Byerwen Coal Pty Ltd, is inturn owned by QCoal, an Australian coal mining company with 80 percentshareholding, and JFE Steel of Japan which hold 20 percent. It is expectedto create up to 350 jobs during the construction stage of the project and over 500 permanent jobs when the open cut mine becomes fullyoperational.

Byerwen Coal to be Exported to Japan and Asia

The Byerwen coal mining project, that is located 165 kilometres west ofMackay, 20 kilometres from the town of Glenden and about 20 kilometressouth of Collinsville, in north Queensland's coal rich Bowen Basin, isexpected to produce 10 million tonnes of high quality, metallurgical, hardcoking coal a year to supply the export market, mainly to Japan, althoughsome sales of thermal coal will be supplied to other Asian countries.

Byerwen Mine to Last for 50 Years

Although the Byerwen Coal mine will initially be operated as an open cutmine, plans have already been made for it incorporate an undergroundworking at the site, at a later date. The coal from the mine will betransported by rail to the Abbot Point coal terminal from where it will beexported overseas. It is expected that coal mining at the site, at theproductivity level proposed, will last for the next 50 years.

Byerwen Coal Pty Ltd will be encouraging its employees to live in thenearby towns of Collinsville, Moranbah, Nebo and Glenden, during theconstruction phase as well as when the mine becomes operational.

Byerwen Coal's Major Shareholder is QCoal

The major shareholder in Byerwen Coal Pty Ltd is QCoal Pty Ltd, anindependent and privately owned Queensland mining company that hasbeen active in Queensland since 1989 undertaking exploration, discoveryand development of coal mining projects. Byerwen Pty Ltd is looking tocreate a sustainable community surrounding the Byerwen mine. It isencouraging developers and planners to come forward to develop the areaso it can become a modern community that will attract couples andfamilies to come and live near their workplace and not follow the recentpractice of many miners who employ fly-in-fly-out mine workers. It lookson suitable accommodation for miners and their families as an importantfactor in such a project becoming successful, as it believes such anapproach contributes to the mental attitude and well being of its entireworkforce.

Byerwen Mine to Consist of Eight Open Pits and an Underground Operation

The Byerwen coal mining project is made up of four distinct mining zonesthat will host eight open pit mines. Two CHPP (coal handling andpreparation plants) are to be constructed along with an augmented andupgraded power supply and two train loading facilities. The mine watersupply will be sourced from the Burdekin River via a new pipeline andpumping station.

QCoal is fast becoming a major player in the Queensland mining industryand it has plans to be in a position to produce up to 22 million tonnes ofcoking coal a year by 2018. Most of this production is expected to comefrom the company's Byerwen and Drake coal mines.
