The McPhee Creek iron ore project is located about 250 kilometres southeast of Port Hedland and approximately 65 kilometres east of Corunna Downs, in the northern Pilbara region of Western Australia. Its proximity to Corunna Downs would allow its direct shipping iron ore (DSO) to be blended with that mined at Corunna Downs, before being transported to Port Hedland for exporting to Asia.

McPhee Creek Mineralisation is Either on or Near the Surface

The DSO grade mineralisation at McPhee Creek is either found at the surface, or near to the surface throughout its eight kilometre strike length, that covers a broad area of land. The deposit was discovered by Giralia Resources in 2009. Giralia Resources was acquired by Atlas Iron Limited in 2011. The DSO mineralisation at McPhee Creek stands at more than 240 million tonnes.

Atlas Iron Limited was Seeking out an Equity Partner to Help Develop the McPhee Creek Project in 2013

In September, 2013, Atlas Iron Limited were actively engaged in seeking out an equity partner to assist in developing the early stages of mining at the McPhee Creek project. The offer created interest among Asian steel mills and trading houses but nothing eventuated owing to the continually dropping price of iron ore on the global market.

Atlas Iron Limited Has Extensive Portfolio of Assets Surrounding the McPhee Creek Project

Atlas Iron Limited has a rather extensive portfolio of iron ore assets in Western Australia, particularly in the north and southeast areas of the Pilbara and Midwest regions. Some of these assets are established mining operations, while some are considered to be exploration and near term projects that range from quite advanced resources to green field projects.

McPhee Creek Project is Part of Atlas Iron's Horizon 2 Expansion Plan

The McPhee Creek project is an extension of Atlas Iron's, Horizon 2 development, which is its planned second growth program that targets production growth through further port and rail development, expansion of its north Pilbara productivity and development of the company's southeast Pilbara resources. Horizon 2 iron ore projects include; McPhee Creek, McCamey's North and Western Creek and Davidson Creek Hub in southeast Pilbara.

Atlas Iron Limited Exports its Iron Ore From the Utah Point Facility at Port Hedland

Atlas Iron ships its iron ore product through the Utah Point facility at Port Hedland that is owned by the Western Australian Government. Atlas Iron was a foundation client of the Utah Point facility and invested in its development. The Western Australian Government is planning on selling the facility but if this does occur it shouldn't have any impact on Atlas Iron's usage of the port, on a day to day basis, as current contracts and usage rights will still exist. The Utah Point facility at Port Hedland, is a single berth, single shiploader designed for multi use. It is able to accept truck delivery of ore to a variety of stockyards. Stockyard 2 has been developed by Atlas Iron for its own use.
