Woodside

Woodside was established in 1953, after Australia's first oil discovery in Western Australia. Incorporated in 1954 as Woodside (Lake Entrance) Oil Co NL, taking its name from the small town in Victoria.

Securing its first offshore exploration licence in 1956, a 2600sq kilometre stretch off Ninety Mile Beach extending 2 kilometres into Bass Strait, drilling up to 60 metres deep at the time.

With further exploration projects in the 60's and 70's throughout Western Australia these gas fields provided the basis for the $19 billion North West Shelf Project which is the largest resource project in Australia.

Supply of domestic gas to industries and homes began in 1984 after Woodside signed a contract with the State Energy Commission of WA.
